There’s a condition called Crime-Induced Pareidolia. You know how some people look at a cloud and see a bunny rabbit?

Well, when some people commit a crime, they start to look at ordinary things and see U.S. Marshals. I reckon there’s a feller in De-troit, Michigan who is so afflicted: Clement Mansell.

Well, Clement. Rest assured. This definitely isn’t a joint task force surveillance van.

This window alight at 1:30 am definitely isn’t a joint task force that has surveilled for days that rat’s nest you call your new Motown home.

There isn’t anyone at DPD central command monitoring this liquor store surveillance cam.

Also, the city definitely doesn’t have facial recognition AI.

Clement, this definitely isn’t an off-duty DPD cop who happened to notice your late-night jaunt to the liquor store.

Listen Clement, drive long enough and it’s only a matter of time before SOME car follows you for 13 blocks through multiple turns.

So you nearly make it home and there’s a guy standing standing in the middle of your street. Big deal. Happens all the time in Detroit.

An opening credits storyboard for the FX crime drama Justified: City Primeval.

City Primeval is about a southern criminal who absconds to Detroit. He is pursued by U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (@Timothy Olyphant).

With a creative brief and NDA-protected pre-pro plot in mind, I hit the streets. I imagined how a city would look to a newly arrived fugitive. Over three sleepless days, I created a series of images that could communicate that feeling in a 10-25 second opening credits montage.

To make the images felt real, I visited real places – including a 2am trip to an east side Detroit liquor store corner renown as a place where "you can buy anything."
